Supporting companies to address SEAH risks through a self-assessment, pilot project and a guidance note

SDDirect was contracted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to help companies manage Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (SEAH) risks. We piloted a self-assessment tool with select companies and developed a toolkit to support Community-Based Grievance and Feedback Mechanisms.

About

This project helped companies in sectors like infrastructure, agriculture, hospitality, manufacturing, health, and finance better understand and mitigate SEAH risks. Using SDDirect’s self-assessment tool, selected companies identified vulnerabilities and developed action plans to improve their response.

While many companies had Community-Based Grievance and Feedback Mechanisms as part of their environmental and social safeguards, these were not always equipped to handle SEAH incidents. To address this, SDDirect developed a toolkit to help companies adapt their mechanisms for inclusive and effective SEAH response.

Lessons

The objectives of the pilot were to:

  • Assess how easily and effectively companies could implement the self-assessment tool.

  • Create a safe, supportive environment for company assessors to share challenges and successes in using the GBVH self-assessment tool.

  • Identify individual and collective barriers, as well as supportive factors, in implementing the tool and discussing GBVH-related issues in the workplace.

SDDirect provided technical support through briefings, kick-off workshops, ongoing 1:1 support, and learning collaboratives. Monitoring and evaluation activities included a mid-project review call, an end-of-project review call, and a final survey.

At the pilot’s conclusion, SDDirect produced a recommendation report with suggestions for improving the GBVH self-assessment tool, along with an updated user guide.
